Half the Wolves team were stuck on the motorway so we couldn’t get the actual match underway until 1.45pm and were always under time pressure to complete. Wolves agreed it was too late in the season to rearrange and to play a 3-setter if necessary but we managed to fit in a full match.
Our B team was noticeably less well organised than the A team, the change in core personnel made for some uncertainty in reception and cover positions but the girls played well pushing Wolves close in both first and second sets and winning the third after some strong serving from YanXi and Gaby.. We faded in the 4th though and basically lost the match on service errors.
Having said that It wasn’t a bad performance. Like the A team game that preceded it this match featured some long and exciting rallies and some outstanding runs of play and our girls were good enough to match Wolves play by play.
Wolves are top of the league, they’ve won all their games and, before this match, had only dropped one set all season. They showed us why they are top with good teamwork, covering the court and recovering well, playing some intelligent ball and, occasionally, creating some effective attack. Our young side has nothing to be ashamed of, we gave them what was probably the hardest game they’ve had all season, and, but for far too many service errors, could well have won.
