VE U14 girls Rd1
Sunday 11 February 2024 12:00
Happy to be part of a new VE initiative to lower the age range by introducing an U14 age group into their competition structure. We have entered two teams Wirral G with 4 girls from Wirral Grammar, and Wirral Q based on Queen’s School, Chester.
There will be 9 teams in the first round.
Venue: Madely High School, Newcastle Road, Crewe, CW3 9JJ
There is a summary of the final rankings for the competition below. You can use this link to open a page with the complete list of matches and results.
The competition was organised so that the nine teams all played each other in a round-robin on 3 courts. It was virtually non-stop with each team playing 8 games over the three and a half hours.
Both Wirral teams were down to 3 players, depleted by absences on the day, but this wasn’t unusual as several of the other teams had only 3 players (due to sickness, half-term, Chinese new year, etc). Despite missing Victoria Wirral G played well, finishing 3rd overall, but it was a brutal baptism in volleyball competition for Wirral Q who began pretty well but went downhill after a couple of losses. They weren’t helped by the exhausting non-stop format which left no time to put the last match behind you and regroup.
Wirral G started badly going down 9-23 in their first set shocked by Urmston B's strong serving, but recovered well to win the second set 15-12. As the competition progressed our girls were able to build on this, our first ball and court coverage were better than any of the other teams and, although we lost a few (silly) sets we had the advantage in most matches and went into the last game against Newcastle A with the chance to finish second overall. Unfortunately ‘Castle’ served better than us, took a big lead in the first set, our girls heads went down, our service faltered, and we never got back into the game going down 11-15, 5-17 and finishing 3rd overall.
Taken as a whole it was a really good perfomance and you can bet we’ll beat Newcastle next time.
