MVL WD2 home match vs Hoylake Hurricanes

Venue; Woodchurch HS, 11:00am

Team: Katie Leppington, Yan Xi Chen, Kaitlin Ha, Imi Newall, Liv Stewart, Abi Larway, Libby Canham

Result: Wirral U16 won 3-0, 26-24, 25-17, 27-25

The best warm-up hitting I’ve seen with Yan Xi and Imi getting on top of the ball with strong middle hits, Abi hitting powerfully from 4 and Katie also looking strong with well-controlled topspin spikes. Unfortunately not too much carried thorugh into the match where we struggled to forge a connection between setter and hitter. 

Hurricanes played better than expected and scrambled better than I’ve seen them manage in previous games but their passing and handling was still appalling, so really it was our errors and failure to build meaningfull attack that kept them in the game. In the end it was a 3-0 victory but we were lucky to have the better of two tight sets when we had to come from behind in the first and struggled to finish the set off after letting Hurricanes back into the game in the third.

That’s the end of the season. It was bit up and down in both the Junior Grand Prix and Merseyside League Div2 but the girls have continued to improve and there is certainly something to build on for next season.
